Spring is here and Brunswick County Master Gardener volunteers have a growing list of opportunities to expand and enhance your garden. In addition to our plant sale, we’re adding more workshops this year. These 1-3 hour, small group sessions will focus on a variety of topics of interest to area residents. Sessions will be both educational and hands on, providing an opportunity to learn and do, taking the final product home with you. Here’s a brief sample of what’s coming up in the next few months:

April 16Creating a Container Herb Garden. This has been a popular workshop and SOLD OUT again this year in less than an hour. Due to its popularity, don’t be surprised if you see it again in mid to late summer.

April 17-26 – Our ON-LINE PLANT SALE will be open for business! This year we’re focusing on those plants that do well in these eastern NC environments. Many will look familiar to you but as is our usual approach we’ll have plenty that you won’t find in area nurseries and “big box” stores.  Place your order by the 26 th , and we’ll have it ready for you when you arrive for pick up on May 2. Can’t be easier than that!

May 17 – Join us for our annual Open House where we show off the County botanical demonstration garden. We have so many demonstration gardens to highlight – sunny and shady native gardens, pollinator garden, azalea and rose gardens, an edible garden, a “discovery” garden (favorite for kids), a rain garden, and so much more. Master gardeners will be there to answer questions about all the different gardens and plants. The Open House is free, so plan to stop by the morning of May17 and walk around at your leisure.

May 21Attracting Bees and Butterflies to your Containers. Those of you interested in pollinator gardens, but who don’t have the dedicated space, come learn what you can do in a container that will attract local bees and butterflies to your patio or deck. Pollinators are critical to our ecosystem so let’s support them any way we can.

July tbdBuilding a Bee Hotel. We have a special workshop for all you grandparents (or parents) looking for ways to engage your visiting grandchildren this summer. Come together to learn how to build a Bee Hotel. Participants will learn about the types of bees attracted to a bee hotel, and will decorate their own hotel to take home.

August 22/23 – Another workshop focusing on the importance of pollinators and the plants that support them. This workshop will include time in the demonstration garden participating in the annual Pollinator Census.

More workshops are in the works, including:

  • How to propagate plants at home,
  • Forcing your spring bulbs at home,
  • Successfully growing tomatoes in SE NC,
  • How to create botanical mocktails, and
  • How to create a “salad bowl” – growing greens in containers

Some of these topics may sound familiar while others may be new to you. All workshops include supplies, plants, and resource material for you to take home.

Stay tuned for more on these upcoming events and additional ones as the year progresses. In the meantime, Happy Gardening.
